Phonological-Awareness /Sensational Six - Phonological Awareness
1. What is phonological awareness? Phonological awareness is the ability to identify and manipulate parts of oral language. These parts are words in a sentence, syllables, onsets and rimes, and phonemes. Children with phonological awareness have the ability to identify and make old rhymes, clap the number of syllables in a word, and recognize words with the same initial sound “bat” and “cat.” 2. What are the components of phonological awareness? There are 4 components of phonological awareness: word, syllables, onset-rime, and phoneme. With words students are able to identify the amount of words in a sentence, create a compound word, break a compound word into two smaller words, and delete one of the smaller words in the compound word. 3. How are oral language development and phonological awareness interrelated? Phonological awareness and oral language development are interrelated because oral language is important for literacy development. Oral language is a complex system that relates sounds to meanings and phonemic awareness is the understanding that spoken language can be broken into phonemes. 4. What elements of effective learning environments that support literacy for this area? (what do you expect to see in a classroom and/or school environment to show support for the development of phonological awareness) 5. What is Dyslexia? Dyslexia is a language-based learning disability who has difficulty with spelling, reading, and writing. This is caused by the brain’s inability to process information received from the eyes or ears into understandable language.
