Thema 1: sociale stratificatie
1.1. Wat is sociale stratificatie?
We leven in een gelaagde samenleving. -> onze samenleving wordt gekenmerkt door sociale
stratificatie.
Stratificatie
Afkomstig uit geologie, analogie met gelaagdheid aardkorst
Zo goed als elke samenleving gekenmerkt door opbouw uit verschillende ‘lagen’.
Mensen die zich in dezelfde laag bevinden, hebben gemeenschappelijke kenmerken met anderen in
hun laag en onderscheiden zich van mensen op andere lagen van de samenleving.
Maar gelaagdheid gaat verder dan al dan niet hebben van gemeenschappelijke kenmerken.
Lagen vormen hiërarchie -> sociale ongelijkheid
Deze sociale ongelijkheid kent relatief stabiel karakter want sterk verankerd in samenleving.
Sociale ongelijkheid duidt op het eigenlijke idee van een hiërarchische opbouw van een samenleving.
-> maatschappelijke ladder
Deze maatschappelijke ladder omvat een combinatie van 2 zaken:
- Sociaal-economische positie
- Sociaal-economische status
Sociaal-economische positie = personen die hoger op ladder gepositioneerd zijn, hebben betere
toegang tot belangrijke middelen in samenleving dan wie lagere plaats inneemt
Hogere positie -> hogere status
Wie hoger staat, krijgt hogere maatschappelijke waardering
Status: men kijkt op naar wie hoger staat en kijkt neer op wie lager staat.
Positie = eigenlijke plaats op de ladder status = waardering
Sociale ongelijkheid hangt onlosmakelijk samen met macht
Macht = Men is in staat om gedrag van ander te beïnvloeden in functie van eigen belang en zelfs
tegen het belang van die andere in.
Hogere positie op maatschappelijke ladder = meer macht uitoefenen mogelijk
+ macht is ook middel om plaats in hiërarchie te kunnen behouden of om hoger in hiërarchie te
kunnen opklimmen.
