,Voorwoord/gebruiksaanwijzing
- Module 1 t/m 5 gaat voornamelijk over theorie
- Vanaf module 6 gaat het over verschillende onderzoeksmethode met de theorie op maat
gemaakt per onderzoeksmethode. De theorie wordt dus vaak herhaald vanaf module 6.
,Module 1.1
What is business research?
- A systematic process of testing hypotheses through carefully executed data analyses to
solve, avoid or minimalize a problem.
Business research is therefore empirical. Data can be collected on many ways. (Survey, databases,
etc.). It is meant to help managers take better decisions.
Intuition of managers should never be a substitute for business research. Managers instinct can
should not be ignored of course, but like all humans there is always a change of cognitive bias. These
are unconscious thinking errors.
There are 3 sorts of cognitive biases:
1. Confirmation bias
This is about the fact that you only look at the information that agrees with you believe. You can for
example only look at the good news on a topic and not the bad news.
2. Availability bias
In this case you only look at the available information, even though this might not be the best
information to rely on. For example, there can be only extreme news about a stock, which can lead
to not the best decisions. Another example is a winning ticket, even thought the changes of winning
the lottery s very low.
3. What you see is all there is bias (WYSIATI)
When you see an relationship between an event and a outcome you see what is present, but you
don’t see what information is absent.
Not all journals are useful for you research. There are some factors you have to recognize:
1. Look if they are peer-reviewed
2. Look at the impact factor (atleast1.0)
3. Look at the list of quality journals (https://www.tilburguniversity.edu/research/economics-
and-management/publications/topjournals)
Within the peer-reviewed articles, the quality may still vary. This can depend on the Sample size for
example. More about this in the next module.
, Module 1.2
Inductive vs deductive research
Inductive research approach is based on first collecting data and then finding a pattern in this data.
After this you create a theoretical framework on this pattern.
Deductive research approach is based on first hypothesize relations between variables based on
theory. This is then used to get data.
Sometimes they are both used in the same study. THIS IS POSSIBLE
There are 7 steps to create a deductive research: This will be explained step by step.
