Tuchman’s Theory
Tuchman’s theory suggests that when you’re working in a group they might
experience some difficulties and some kind of struggle. The theory focuses on
how a team might tackle a problem or a project. In addition to that; the theory
clearly shows what stage the group is in. This theory is usually used when
working in groups. There are five stages in the Tuchman’s theory.
Stage one: forming- This is the stage in which people meet for the very first time
and exchange information.
Stage two: Storming- In this stage a group is formed, but there might be
arguments on how the group should be functioned.
Stage three: Norming- The group starts to agree on their group values. The group
will slowly start to come together.
Stage four: Performing- The team will start working together and will establish
“common expectation”. The group will start to be a performing group.
Stage five: Adjourning- In this stage the group will have succeeded in all their
goals and now it will be time say goodbye.
The communication cycle is used every day by people without even noticing it,
an example of the communication cycle being used effectively in health and
social care environment is in hospitals by doctors working with patients when
prescribing a medicine the patient needs to take in order to get better, the
patient will need to understand when to take the medicine and how much they
need to take, with the use of the communication cycle the patient will
understand how the medication works and will be able to interact and ask
questions if the communication is not understood. However things can easily go
wrong with the communication cycle, this because the doctor thinking of the idea
in stage one may not have thought out the idea properly. As a result the idea is
too vague or inaccurate. Therefore the patient may start to make assumptions
which are incorrect about what is said which could have severe consequences.
