Wat is cultuur?
Definities

18e eeuw – Frankrijk: Cultuur = training of 19e eeuw - antropoloog Edward Tylor: Cultuur
verfijning van de geest of smaak. => De term = beschaving, het complexe geheel dat kennis,
werd snel uitgebreid tot de kwaliteiten van een taal, geloof, etc. en alle andere capaciteiten
opgeleid persoon, en heeft die betekenis tot omvat die de mens als lid van de samenleving
vandaag behouden. heeft verworven.

Cultuur wordt geassocieerd met de gedeelde sociale dimensie en gelijkenissen tussen de mensen die
deel uitmaken van een bepaalde groep of gemeenschap.

Basis van cultuur
1. herhaling,
2. traditie,
3. het gebonden zijn aan regels.

Veronderstellingen over de locatie van cultuur
1. alleen in de geest van de mens,
2. zowel in de geest van de mens als in de door mensen geschapen materiële wereld
3. alleen extern aan de geest van de mens.

Nadruk op kennisnetwerken die bestaan uit verworven routines van denken, voelen en interageren
met anderen. (Psychische => 1 & 2)

Erkend dat deze kennisnetwerken worden veruiterlijkt door symbolen, artefacten, sociale
constructies en instituties. Deze externe tekens en structuren dragen bij aan een gemene grond voor
communicatie. (Materiële => 2 & 3)
Voorbeeld zowel in de geest als in de materiële wereld:
“Culture consists of patterns, explicit and implicit, of and for behavior acquired and transmitted by
symbols, constituting the distinctive achievement of human groups, including their embodiments in
artefacts; the essential core of culture consists of traditional (i.e. historically derived and selected)
ideas and especially their attached values; culture systems may, on the one hand, be considered as
products of action, on the other as conditioning elements of further action”. (Kroeber & Kluckhohn
1952, 181)
