How does the writer use language and structure to encourage the reader to challenge
unfair treatment? You should support your answer with close reference to the
passage and brief quotations.

Throughout the extract from “young and dyslexic? You’ve got it going on” the writer
uses various language and structure techniques, intended to encourage the readers to
stand up to unfair treatment. In this extract Zephaniah talks about his experience with
dyslexia and the struggle that came along with it.

The writer uses the rule of three to show the reader the benefits of perseverance. He
does this by showing own personal experience, in the education system when he was
growing up he describes it as “no compassion, no understanding and no humanity”. This
portrays to the reader that despite the harsh and brutal environment Zephaniah grew
up in he managed to survive and become very successful. This pushes the reader to
resist bad company and still have hope for a better future.

The writer uses second person pronouns to make the reader feel stronger. Throughout
the extract the writer uses words such as “you,” “you’re” and “your”. By doing this the
message conveyed in his writing feels more directed to the reader. This helps the reader
understand the importance of self belief and it motivates them as they feel like
Zephaniah is asking the reader directly to stand up against ignorant people.

Zephaniah’s use of a contrast shows the reader that having a struggle like dyslexia is not
a weakness. “A high percentage of prison population are dyslexic and a high percentage
of the architect population” this suggests to the reader that you can choose your own
path in life and dyslexia shouldn’t stop you as many architects, who are very important
and considered very intelligent, are dyslexic. This example makes the reader think about
the life that has been set out for them and whether it is what they desire.

Zephaniah uses a simple sentence to portray the simplicity to the key of his success. “I
just had self-belief.” This brings hope to the readers mind making them feel as if it is
possible for them to overcome similar challenges and authority that Zephaniah has in
his life. It makes it feel like more of a realistic goal after the writer explains that it wasn’t
just luck that brought him his success.
(30 minutes)

The writer uses a rhetorical question to relate people not understanding dyslexia to
racists. “I don’t sit down and think, “how can I become white?”” The writer does this to
show the absurdity of bullying someone for something they cannot control. The writer
tries to make the reader understand that having authority doesn’t make someone
correct which encourages the reader to stand up to unfair treatment.
