ASSIGNMENT 5
Trung Duong Nguyen - 14624761
Syifa Nadhira Nurul Izzah - 63842660
Hussein Al Aaref - 19722024

1. In this assignment, we would like you to reflect on your experience in this course. As a team, discuss the
following prompts and write a one-paragraph response to each.

(a) What new challenges or difficulties did you face in this course that you had not encountered before?
How did you address them?

The main challenge that we found difficult is try to do the assignment together but without re-
ally seeing each other. Normally, when we do group activities, we prefer/are used to involving
talking and doing work together, but as our section is online, we did not have the opportunity to
meet each other. For the first and second assignments, we just simply divided our work online and
try to work individually and then compare our results online, which work pretty well. Then we found
a day that all of us are on campus so we decided that day to be the day when we come together
and work on the assignment. If we have to choose one of the methods, we would prefer the meeting
offline but we think that getting used to both of the ways of working might help us in the future
when one simply doesn’t work out.

(b) Has your experience in this course changed your view of mathematics? If so, how? If not, why not?

Previously, we simply thought that math is a very theoretical subject that is the base for every
other science subject like physic, chemistry, or even biology. We also learned that there is a strict
connection between math and those science but we never learn how to use that connection to make
our understanding deeper. Straightforward, this course name is “Differential Calculus with Appli-
cants”, and it not only shows us the connection but it makes us understand it so well that we can
actually use it in application problems from any field of science. The course also gives us the idea
that the theoretical part of math is not that important if it can not be applied to real-life problems,
as the professor talks very little about why the math work, but more focus on how the function of
math can be used and applied.

(c) In this course you have solved many difficult quantitative problems. Imagine you are in a job inter-
view and the interviewer asks you to describe your approach to solving quantitative problems. How
would you respond?

One of the things that we learned about quantitative problems is figuring out the general func-
tion of the problem is crucial, as for every written assignment we will have at least some kind of
function, either it is fully solved (no constant) or there will be a bunch of constant in it. In an
interview, we obviously won’t expect them to give us a function to work on, so we will use one
important technique that can start any type of problem: ansatz. By literally guessing the function,
we will have a good place to start with, then we can change the ansatz to make it further suitable.

(d) Write a brief message to the rest of the class to motivate them for the final exam. (Be creative! The
best messages will be given a bonus mark and may be posted anonymously on Piazza.)

Just the fact that we have stayed and are ready to take the final exam is enough to motivate
ourself.
