Een alinea:
• Is bijna altijd 7-12 regels, of 6-7 zinnen lang – nooit langer dan een pagina
• Heeft altijd een kernzin (vaak de eerste of tweede zin)
• Heeft altijd maar 1 onderwerp
• Heeft altijd een functie, en bevat daarom vaak één of meerdere signaalwoorden

Alinea = 1 kernzin + 6 à 7 andere zinnen die met de kernzin samenhangen



Voorbeeld: te korte alinea’s

Nog nooit is men erin geslaagd een natie door middel van een luchtoorlog tot capitulatie te
dwingen. Oud-president Bush heeft dat duidelijk ingezien en een enorm aantal
landmachteenheden ingezet in de operatie Desert Storm.

Zelfs in Bosnië hebben de bombardementen uitsluitend ertoe gediend om de tegenpartij aan
de onderhandelingstafel te krijgen; de feitelijke strijd is op de grond beslecht.

Natuurlijk, er is een uitzondering die de regel bevestigt: Japan heeft na Hiroshima en
Nagasaki gecapituleerd. Maar het atoomwapen is in de strijd op de Balkan geen optie.
