Definitions:Comet- Cosmic snowballs of frozen glasses, rock, and dust that orbit the Sun. Can sometimes be seen
from earth.
Asteroid-a small rocky body orbiting the sun.
Meteor- A meteor is a meteoroid that, upon entering Earth’s atmosphere, begins to burn as a result of
friction. (Meteorites don’t burn up completely).
Meteorites- are small pieces of rock or metal that travel throughout the solar system with no fixed
path.
Nebula- huge clouds of dust and gasses, mainly Hydrogen and Helium.
Astronomer- Scientist that studies the universe.
Astronomical Unit(AU)- The distance between the Earth and the Sun(149 599 000 km). 1ly = 63,000
AU, Earth is always 1 AU.
Light year(ly)- The distance that light travels in one year. 1ly = 9000 billion km, speed of light = 299

Eclipse- Light that blocks celestial objects.
Tides- Alternate rising and falling of the level of the oceans every day. Caused by the gravitational pull
of the Moon and Sun on the Earth, as well as the spinning of the Earth.
Aurora Borealis- Northern skylight
Astronaut- A person that is trained to go to outer space.
Astrology- The study of the movement of celestial bodies interpreted in terms of their effects on
humans.

Nuclear Fusion: In the core of the Sun hydrogen is being converted into helium. This is called nuclear
fusion. It takes four hydrogen atoms to fuse into each helium atom. During the process, some of the
mass is converted into energy.
