symmetrisch. Veel soorten dieren zijn tweezijdig-symmetrisch. Deze dieren kun je maar op
één manier in twee gelijke helften verdelen. Sommige dieren kun je ook op meerdere
manieren in gelijke helften verdelen, dat noem je veelzijdig-symmetrisch. Maar er zijn ook
dieren die je helemaal niet in gelijke helften kan verdelen, dat noem je niet-symmetrisch.
Veel dieren hebben stevige delen in of om hun lichaam. Deze stevige delen vormen het
skelet van een dier. Het skelet geeft stevigheid en bescherming. Een skelet aan de
buitenkant van het lichaam heet, een uitwendig skelet. Zit het binnen in het lichaam heet
dat, een inwendig skelet. Maar er zijn ook dieren die geen skelet hebben die wonen meestal
in het water.
Belangrijke kenmerken bij de indeling van dieren zijn de symmetrie en het skelet. Dieren
worden verdeeld in 34 stammen.
