My expectations and first reaction
I had high expectations. It is ‘The Great Gatsby’, a famous book that comes up quite
frequently. However, the book disappointed me, maybe because of my high expectations. In
the beginning I already noticed that the story didn’t pull me in.
Summary
Nick Carraway moves to New York. He settles in a neighborhood on Long Island, near his
cousin Daisy and her husband Tom. She and golfer Jordan Baker welcome him, but Nick is
mainly interested in his wealthy neighbor, Mr. Gatsby. Nick is personally invited to one of
Mr. Gatsby’s big parties and meets the man himself. Mr. Gatby and Nick get along quite well
and start to hang out together. Through Jordan Baker, Nick discovers that his cousin Daisy
was dating Gatsby in 1917, but he was too poor and was sent out because he was in the
army. Her parents forced her to marry Tom and eventually she fell in love with him. Gatsby
asks Nick if he can arrange a meeting between him and Daisy. What Nick doesn’t know is
that Gatsby is still madly in love with Daisy. He has moved into this house, in this place to be
closer to her. Everything goes according to plan and the love between Daisy and Gatsby
seems to rekindle during their reunion. On Nick's thirtieth birthday, he, Tom, Daisy, Jordan
and Gatsby head into town together. Tom discovers that Daisy and Gatsby are more than
just friends and love each other. After a lot of fighting, they drive back to Long Island in two
cars. Gatsby and Daisy in one and Tom, Nick and Jordan in the other one. On the way back
Daisy hits a woman with her car, who dies on the spot. Little did she know that she just killed
the women her husband was having an affair with. Both Daisy and Gatsby keep this a secret.
The same night Gatsby gets murdered by the husband of the woman who died. Tom told
him it was Gatsby who killed his wife. After he shot Gatsby he commits suicide. Nick
manages to reach Gatsby's father, who is coming for the funeral. Daisy doesn’t respond to
the news that her beloved is dead. Hardly anyone shows up at the funeral. Nick tries to get
back to his life and goes back home.
Tittle explanation
Gatsby is a very rich and generous man. He throws the biggest parties for people he barely
knows. Hence the title ‘The Great Gatsby’. A man of great things.
