Context to: rising sea levels, climate changes

Problems:
1. Predictions that the island could disappear in the next 50 years
2. Threats to being submerged- very low lying land
3. Threats to freshwater reserves- contaminated GW stores affecting ability to
grow crops- issue with water insecurity


Coping to climate change:
1. Population forced to migrate to other nations- environment refugees.
2. Local community & volunteers are planting mangroves on shore as the roots help
decrease land erosion by the high tides.
3. So far, 50,000 mangroves have been planted.




Holderness Coast

Context to: Coastal management, rising sea levels, SMPs


Reasons why the coasts need managing:
1. Fastest eroding coastline in Europe poses threats (flooding & erosion) to:
a. Coastal resorts (Withernsea)
b. Coastal roads
c. Gas pipeline terminal at Easington


The SMP for this section of the sediment cell looks to protect areas under threat:
1. Flamborough- Do nothing
2. Withernsea- holiday resort- Hold the line
a. Coastal defences: Rip rap, sea walls, some beach nourishment
3. Mappleton- small village, main coastal road- Hold the line
a. Coastal defences: revetments, regrading of cliffs, beach nourishment
4. Easington- Gas terminal- Hold the line
a. Coastal defences: revetments
5. Spurn Head- retreat- Do nothing
a. No longer could afford to repair the damage from storms so it was
officially abandoned in 1995
