In this class discussion, you will reflect on the impact the brain has on love, romanticrelationships and the development and maintenance of love addiction. Please use the course

From the male perspective, the idea of love at first sight can easily be misconstrued as lust at first
sight. Although I do believe that there are times when it is truly a feeling of love. It seems to me
that most men have lust first, but over time it turns to love as they get to know the person better.
Since mate choice is centered on the reward and motivation pathways, I believe that men tend to
confuse the difference between lust and love. I think that once the “honeymoon” phase is over
and the intensity of the relationship fades, from that point forward it becomes a conscious choice
to continue the relationship based on mutuality. As both partners learn more about the other, the
attachment tends to grow stronger or causes the dissolution of the relationship. It seems to me
that companionate love then takes over and helps the relationship to flourish. By that time the
neural pathways have been established which allow oxytocin and vasopressin to flood the brain
with messages. This allows the attachment to border on addiction since the same reward system
of the brain is affected.
