Alles wat je waar kunt nemen met je zintuigen noem je : macroniveau. De kleinste
deeltjes waaruit een stof is opgebouwd noem je microniveau. De meeste stoffen
bestaan uit moleculen. Een molecuul is het kleinste deeltje van een stof dat nog de
eigenschappen van die stof heeft. Moleculen gedragen zich verschillend in fasen :
In vaste fase stapelen de moleculen zich op, dit noem je een rooster. Om moleculen
en andere dingen op microniveau goed te laten zien gebruik je modellen. Dit (en
simulaties) zijn vereenvoudigde weergaves van de werkelijk.

Binnen moleculen zijn er ook nog atomen, deze zijn bouwstenen voor de moleculen.
Een verbinding heeft meerdere atoomsoorten, elementen hebben één atoomsoort.
Er zijn ruim 110 atoomsoorten, deze geef je aan met een symbool die is afgeleid uit de
naam. Hierom is het periodiek systeem gemaakt, een systeem waar alle
atoomsoorten staan gerangschikt op eigenschappen. Het grootste gedeelte zijn
metalen, de rest zijn niet-metalen of metalloïden. Deze groepen moet je kennen:
Groep 1 : alkalimetalen
Groep 2 : aardalkalimetalen
Groep 17 : halogenen
Groep 18 : edelgassen
