Unit 6 Principles of management:
Introduction:
This report has been compiled by (............) and is intended for the newly merged business,
Local Gym Plc.The purpose of the report is show the understanding of the importance of
performance appraisals to multifit gym plc achieving its business goals.Recommend
improvements that Multifit Gyms Plc could make in its performance appraisals
performance.Multi Fit Gyms Plc was set up in the 1990’s and has had success with its
fitness brands of 20 Gyms. It has had an increase in its reputation over the 5 years for
innovation with online classes alongside outrageous customer service. The business officially
employed 300 members of staff alongside 15 head offices who looked after and supported
such activities as marketing, finance and human resources.
The business had a supportive six-month probationary period where the business would
check the success and the efficiency of staff. However there was little to no monitoring of
staff and performance. So in my opinion the 6 months training was useless to the business
as there was no system in place to track the performance of the staff.
Part A also mentions how only 75% of employees were Full-Time and 25% were part-time or
on a fixed number of hours a day. The difference between Part time and Full time
employment is that part time involves working less than 35 hours a week and full-time
includes 35+ a week.. Employees can work more hours, if they wish, than those written in
their contract. But cannot work less hours as they have to be paid that minimum number of
hours a Zero hours: there is no set hours written in the contract
The disadvantage of part time workers is that there is no actual income for employees
therefore it might affect them financially and beneficially.Another disadvantage is that it might
not be able to access their progress anyways if employees are working part-time as they
won't be spending as long hours with the business.
The members of the MF gyms employees liked and approached with the laid-back
management style. This management style involves little monitoring and it allows staff to
make its own decisions on where and when to work. The employees of MF gyms found it this
management style “empowering”.The staff had the freedom to do whatever they liked during
their working hours because their was hardly any monitoring and staff had the licence to not
give their 100% to the job.
The advantages of the Laid-back management style is that it boosts the employees
confidence, the staff of the business gets to demonstrate their solution to their problems to
boost their confidence. The resources are also required by the manager on the request of the
employees and managers provides some guidance but the workers feel trusted to complete
business goals and task on their own, without constant management. This can also lead
employees to feel more motivated and satisfied with how they go on about their work, which
may lead to increase in productivity as well.
