Amsterdam, centrum van de wereldhandel.
In de Gouden zeventiende eeuw was Amsterdam het centrum van de wereldhandel. De Dam
vormde het bruisende hart van de stad.
Amsterdam bloeide in de zeventiende eeuw niet alleen, maar groeide ook. Tussen 1550 en 1700
verzevenvoudigde het aantal inwoners tot ruim 200.000. Voor de huisvesteging van nieuwe
stedelingen waren telkens nieuwe stadsuitbreidingen nodig.
Het centrum van handel en economische bedrijvigheid verplaatste zich in de loop van de
Middeleeuwen van zuid naar noord: van Vlaanderen, via Brabant, naar Holland. Terwijl het
inwonertal van Amsterdam snel toenam, daalde het inwonertal van Atrecht. Deze stad had haar
functie in het Internationale handelsnetwerk verloren.
Waardoor kon Atrecht, in de twaalfde eeuw een centrum van internationale handel, verkommeren
tot een stad van hooguit regionale betekenis? Hoe kon het vissersdorp Amsterdam uitgroeien tot
een marktplaats voor handelswaren uit alle werelddelen?
