One-to-one interaction:
In this example, there is a 22-year-old man named John who has one-to-one support 7 hours a week
provided by the Lincolnshire County council. The purpose of the independent living workers visits is
to try and increase John ability to be more Independent and decrease his hours of one-to-one
support so it gives him the freedom to be able to go out and do things by himself. John doesn't like
going of his comfort zone so trying to get thing like doing the dishwasher or trying new healthy food
is a challenge for him as he has never done any of this before. John also feels very uncomfortable
interacting with people and going on things such as busses are a struggle for him because he gets
very nervous around people he hasn’t met before. The independent living worker persistently uses
positive body which increases John’s self-esteem and talks to him in an appropriate manner so he
feels like he can go at things at his own pace which will make him feel comfortable and empowered.
Professional: (knocks on door John opens the door) “Hi, John I’m here for the visit we discussed last
week.
John: (invites the worker inside)
Professional: (walks into his house with a smile and gets invited to living room) “is it ok to sit down?”
John: yes
Professional: (then sits down on the sofa facing John with positive body language and appropriate
eye contact) “How are you today John?”
John: “good.”
Professional: “what have you been up to this week?”
John: “I went with Alice and we took the bus to go food shopping then we went too feed bread to
the ducks.”
Professional: “did you have fun?”
John: “yes I had fun feeding the ducks but I was a bit nervous when I was on the bus.”
Professional: ‘we’re all a bit nervous getting on the bus at first but well done for using the bus that is
quite a big thing to do. John, can I ask you what food you have been eating this week?”
John: “I had coco pops for breakfast and had ham and cheese sandwiches for lunch everyday. And
for dinner I cooked pasta on Monday, pizza on Tuesday, a salad on Wednesday pasta, on Thursday a
pizza and on Friday had fish and chip takeaway.
Professional: pleased to see you are having more healthy meals and you are using the oven
independently. Did you enjoy your meals?”
John: “yes I did enjoy all my meals but I didn’t really like the green and yellow peppers.”
Professional: “shall we make a new food shopping list and you can tell me what things you don’t
want me to put on it and what things you would like on the list?”
John: “yes please.”
