century, some changes in society shape and determines child development. Firstly, the life
expectancy of children has been increased as a result of technological advancements.
Previously, people would die as a result of viral and bacterial diseases this has however changed
because of the technological advancements such as refrigerators and bottle steamers. These
help in the alleviation of bacteria that can contaminate food. As a result of this, illnesses have
significantly reduced and life expectancy has increased because there are now more ways of
ensuring children are healthy. This includes vaccinations, (Belsky, 2018). The rapid increase
in education has also influenced the development of children. During the period when children
are in school, they have to be dependent on their parents for all their needs. As a result, it creates
boundaries and sets limitations for children. This also is a change in society that explains
development in the twentieth century. In the current society, families are also decreasing as a
result of the use of contraception and abortions, (Belsky, 2018). These family planning methods
have contributed to the significant decline in the fertility rates of women and concurrently the
decrease in childbearing. This decrease in families is also causing a decrease in population.
There has been a significant decline also in the traditional family which is a family structure
with a man and a woman who are husband and wife and their children. Different family
structures have formed for example the single-headed family. These families sometimes have
challenges because it can be emotionally draining to raise children individually. Not only
emotional challenges are faced when raising children as a single parent, but economic
challenges may be faced as well if the parent is not financially stable. Socio-economic status
is also another context that determines children’s lives. This means that children born and
raised in low-income households are at a disadvantage as compared to children raised in high-
income households. Economic status determines an individual’s quality of life, living
conditions, education, as well as health status. This means that if children are raised in low-
income households they are more likely to experience challenges based on their quality of
living, diet, and housing conditions. On the contrary, children from high socio-economic
statuses may have better living conditions, further education, and live longer because they have
better access to good health, a balanced diet, and better living conditions which do not impact
their health negatively.
Gender also has an impact on the development of children. Society defines and labels different
gender roles for boys and girls. This promotes different development of children. For example,
boys are nurtured to be tough and girls are nurtured to be soft. This promotes differences
