Inleiding
Accountability crisis for democracy: er zijn minder journalisten die zich perse richten op wat de top doet.
De eerste rede hiervoor:
1. economisch
2. technologisch; individuen kunnen zelf kennis creëren, verzamelen en verspreiden
Leidt tot een verandering
1. oude media bundelden nieuws in bijvoorbeeld kranten. Dus department store informatie.
Toch blijft nieuws belangrijk voor politici en diegene die aan de macht zijn:
1. het managen van nieuws is een maatstaf voor wie de informatie voorziening controleert voor grote
groepen publiek.
2. de uitdagingen tussen invalshoeken die gepromoot worden door verschillende belangen is juist de
arena voor democratie. Vaak worden die belangen wel opgesteld door de elite, maar worden deze
belangen vertaald als de ‘belangen van het volk’ door diezelfde elite.
3. En ondanks de fragmentatie blijft het nieuws één van de beste manieren om het grote publiek te
bereiken.

De erosie van verantwoordelijke journalistiek: The Economic Collapse of the News Business
Het oppervlakte niveau van deze crisis is dat het zakenmodel ineenstort dat lang er voor zorgde dat publiek
aan adverteerders werd gekoppeld door het nieuws. Het nieuws was dus de broker die bepaalde wat er
gezegd werd tegen wie. Internet zorgde dat zowel het publiek als de adverteerders hier vanaf weken.

Het publiek lijkt hier niet om te rouwen. Men stond toch al sceptisch tegenover de effectiviteit van het
nieuws om een controlerende rol te vervullen. daarbij zijn er zoveel vormen van output van informatie dat
de traditionele vormen niet meer noodzakelijk zijn.

Ondanks dat problemen met verantwoordelijkheid of watchdog functie van journalisme allang optraden
voordat het systeem ineen klapte, proberen veel journalisten en nieuws organisaties het zakenmodel te
herstellen door bijvoorbeeld geld te vragen. maar mensen willen ook gewoon verschillende vormen van
informatie, niet alleen tv en kranten.

Informatie bereikt mensen niet meer op vast momenten via vaste kanalen. Dankzij sociale media kan men
zelf bepalen wanneer wat te zien. Deze netwerken kunnen elk moment veranderen van vorm en omvang
zodra mensen meer of minder delen met hun kennissen en vrienden. Je hebt niet langer een journalist
nodig om het grote publiek te bereiken.
