(Describe the structure and organisation of the retail sector.)
, Tesco PLC
Jack Cohen, son of Polish emigrant has started his business at Well
Street Market, Hackney, East London in 1919. At first he began to sell
surplus groceries from a stall owning a small shop, and only in 1924 he
came up with TESCO brand. The name came about after Jack Cohen
bought a shipment of tea from Thomas Edward Stockwell. He made
new labels using the first three letters of the supplier's name (TES),
and the first two letters of his surname (CO), forming the word
TESCO. Over the years his business has grown, especially in 1950-60s,
when company has purchased a lot of its competitor’s stores. That
very felicitous investment poked TESCO up on the ladder of success.
Originally specified on food and drinks, company has expanded range
of product availability; they have subjoined clothing, electronics,
chancellery, household appliances, etc…
,Maplin PLC
Maplin Electronic Supplies was established
in 1972 as a small mail order business by Roger
and Sandra Allen and Doug Simmons. The
first store opened in Westcliff-on-Sea. Sales
received a large boost when Maplin was invited
to take prime advertising space in IPC
Electronics magazines after receiving a large
number of complaints against some of their
existing advertisers.
As for July 2014 Maplin Electronics is a big
retailer of electronic goods in the UK and
Ireland and there are 210 stores opened.
, Lakeside Shopping Centre
Opened on 25th October 1990 by Princess
Alexandra, Marcus Bradford and Angus Ogilvy,
Lakeside Shopping Centre, together with the
adjoining Retail Park, Lakeside acted as a catalyst
for development in the local area. The regional
shopping centre quickly became a success,
attracting high profile stores and plenty of
shoppers.
Both of the businesses presented above operate
within Lakeside Shopping Centre and I am going
to use them as an examples in order to illustrate
the organisation and structure of retail industry.
, Organisation of Business
The way a business is organised and ruled plays a significant part in its
establishment and defines its success. Retailers must take a sensible approach
regarding their business organisation in each stage of their lifecycle in order to
maintain strong marketing positions.
