, Question 1:
1.1 Discuss how ICT integration can transform teaching and learning in the context of
South Africa.
There are several ways that ICT can transform teaching and learning in the context
of South Africa.
- It captures and hold the learner’s attention.
- It motivates and encourage the learners to participate and engage actively in
a lesson.
- It enables the leaners to be part of the learning progress.
- Computer technology supports a variety of learning styles.
- It enhances/ revolutionizes the learning process.
The overall purpose of implementing ICTs in classrooms is to provide quality
education to all the learners. By implementing ICTs in the classroom, it will have a
massive impact on the performance of South African students.
It provided a unique and powerful teaching and learning opportunity for both the
learner and the teacher. There are a lot of benefits that was supposed to supports,
extends and amplifies learner’s cognitive abilities to perform learning activities.
It helps to communicate information to the learners. It helped the learners to retrieve
information, they could have search on google or any other available resources. The
learners build up computer skills, and the teachers/ learners had many resources
available that they could have used.
1.2 Explain FIVE (5) challenges that hindered the successful implementation of ICT in
Gauteng Schools
On 8 May 2012, it was reported by Pretoria News that not all schools in Gauteng
benefitted from this project and most computers were not operational. Serao (2012)
performed an audit, and the results revealed the following:
- Inadequate security measures
- Gauteng online
- Inadequate support and maintenance of equipment
- Failure to replace stolen goods
- Failure to pay service providers on time
Not all teachers are familiar and comfortable with ICTs, especially “old school”
teachers, they prefer textbooks and paper. A teacher’s attitude toward ICTs can
have a huge impact on how successful implementing ICTs is. There is also a lack of
technical support, so even a teacher has a positive attitude towards it, and there isn’t
technical support, she/ he can do nothing. There should be enough hardware for all
the students for ICT to be successful. These days kids know to much about
technology, so they will think that they know everything, and will not pay attention
when a teacher tries to explain something. There is also not enough time to
experiment with modern technology.
