a) Indigenous Knowledge
This word can be interpreted in diverse ways at various places.
Indigenous Knowledge can be best described in the following terms, people,
place/content. Language, knowledge, culture, practices, and dynamism. This
is the knowledge that local community members gathers and make a living
out of it.
b) Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS)
This is local knowledge that have been developed within Indigenous societies.
It is independent of and prior to the advent of the modern scientific knowledge
system. This knowledge developed through few experiments, and it was
passed on from generation to generation.
c) Traditional Knowledge (TK)
Traditional Knowledge is skills that are developed and sustained. It is passed
on from generation to generation. This forms part the traditions. People in
rural areas have developed their own knowledge, and their knowledge system
works for them, so they do not interact with other knowledge systems.
d) Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK)
This is knowledge and skills that have been developed through direct contact
with the environment. This also describes the knowledge of local resources. It
is the body of natural history that is built up by nature.
e) Traditional Environmental Knowledge
This is knowledge and skills built up by first hand experiences. This
knowledge is also passed on from generation to generation. It contains
specific information about the relationships between the people and their
environment. In order to understand and know your environment, you need to
be in close contact with it.

Why is Indigenous knowledge important?
IK is important because it provides the people in a certain environment (local
communities) with problem solving strategies, especially for the disadvantaged
people.
Examples:
➢ It represents the importance of one’s health in the environment that one lives
in. It is important to look after yourself.

issues.
➢ Indigenous knowledge helps us to pass on knowledge and skills from one
generation to another. Young individuals can learn more about their culture
through Indigenous knowledge.
➢ It helps individuals to understand local conditions
➢ It leaves space for learning and adapting. It accommodates unique styles of
learning.
