George is a man in his mid- fifties with a successful life as attorney and legal scholar, he is an active family man who is heavily involved in his son’s sport actives and even coaching his son’s basketball team. After a fall and treatment for an injured hip George started exper iencing muscle weakness which has led to the diagnosis of a terminal illness, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). George and his family are devastated by the diagnosis, and he begins to dread the prospect of losing his mobility and speech and becoming dep endent on others. As, he contemplates his future George begins to consider the possibility of voluntary euthanasia. This writer will discuss the case according to the Christian worldview, Interpreting George’s suffering considering the Christian worldview with an emphasis on the fallenness of the world and the light of hope of resurrection. This writer will also look at the case with an emphasis on the values and consideration of the Christian worldview and consider options that would morally justify the action of euthanasia. To conclude this writer will give their own opinions as to what they would do in this situation according to their own world view. CASE STUDY ON DEATH AND DYING 2 PHI 413V: Ethical And Spiritual Decision Making In Health Care Georges View Of His Suffering George is experiencing a state of grief. He has fear and dread over the possibility of loss of his bodily functions. He is unsure if he is willing to endure the loss of dignity by becoming dependent on others for his every day basic functions. According to Axelrod there are five stages of grief these include denial and isolation, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. Axelrod also notes that people who are grieving do not necessarily go through the stages in the same order or experience all of them, (Axelrod, J. (2019)). George appears to be in the stages of bargaining and depression, George is therefore considering voluntary euthanasia. George feels like a fallen man and has lost god in his decision making. In the Christian worldview God created the heavens and earth. He created man in his image, so therefore, each life is sacred and for only God to decide when that life is to end meaning euthanasia is a sin against God. Humans were to have domain over all living creatures and to protect and cultivate the earth, (Shelly J.A., Miller A.B. (2006). However, God gave Adam and Eve free will to choose this led to Adam and Eve being tempted to eat from the forbidden tree. By doing this they disobeyed God, and by this act they rejected God and creation which was good. This allowed evil to come into the world in the shape of death, disease and suffering. Due to redemption there is hope however, suffering, sickness and d eath are evils that plague human life, but to lose God or have reason to doubt his faithfulness to us would be the greatest evil, (Shelly J.A., Miller A.B. (2006). Therefore, through faith and belief in God’s plan we will lead humanity to restoration. God will eventually come again to purge evil from the world and restore all creatures to a state of shalom.
