Use the information on GPS.gov, including the page "How GPS Works," to answer
question 1.
1. a. Explain what the GPS is, including the equipment it requires and the function it performs. (2
points)
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a U.S.-owned utility that provides users with
positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) services. This system consists of three segments: the
space segment, the control segment, and the user segment. The U.S. Air Force develops,
maintains, and operates the space and control segments.

b. Briefly summarize the history of the GPS. (2 points)
GPS has its origins in the Sputnik era when scientists were able to track the satellite with shifts in
its radio signal known as the "Doppler Effect." The United States Navy conducted satellite
navigation experiments in the mid 1960's to track US submarines carrying nuclear missiles.

c. Give at least two examples of how the GPS is used. (2 points)
GPS systems are extremely versatile and can be found in almost any industry sector. They map
forests, help farmers harvest their fields, and navigate airplanes on the ground or in the air.
Positioning systems are integral to military applications, and for emergency crews to locate
people in need of assistance.

Use the information in What Is Remote Sensing? and Remote Sensing to answer question 2.
2. What are remote-sensing satellites? (2 points)

, Remote sensing is the science of obtaining information about objects or areas from a distance,
typically from aircraft or satellites. A Lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) image created with
data collected by NOAA's National Geodetic Survey. ... In contrast, active sensors use internal
stimuli to collect data about Earth.
Use Google Earth and what you learned about remote sensing to answer question 3.
3. Use Google Earth to learn how remote-sensing satellites and the GPS are used together in
environmental science. First, find the U.S. location given by the GPS coordinates 35°17' N
latitude and 76°01' W longitude. You can do this by moving the cursor around the globe and
noticing how the display of latitude and longitude at the bottom right changes. Once you locate
the correct general area, zoom in, and then keep moving the cursor until you find the precise
location.

a. What type of ecosystem is located at this position? (2 points)
The ecosystem is sea level ground.

b. What could you hypothesize if remote-sensing data showed abnormally high levels of the
color of light reflected by chlorophyll coming from this area now, compared with the past 10
years? (2 points)
Compared with the past ten years, I think the clearness gets worse due to the global warming and
air pollution.

Use the information in The Invention of GIS and Brief History of Geographical
Information Systems to answer questions 4 and 5.
4. a. Explain what a GIS is, including the equipment it requires and an example of the type of
information it displays. (2 points)
A framework to organize, communicate, and understand the science of our world. GIS gathers,
manages, and analyzes data. Rooted in the science of geography, GIS analyzes spatial location
and organizes layers of information into visualizations using maps and 3D scenes.

b. Explain how and why GISs were developed and first used and how they are used today. (2
points)
Navstar launched in 1982 which required a minimum of 18 operable satellites, 6 in 3 orbital
planes spaced 120 degrees apart at 12, 660 miles contact with 5 to 8 satellites required to provide
fix.
