CAUSES OF DEMOCRACY:
• General discontent caused by the economic crisis in 1866, caused unemployment
and raised prices.
• Opposition to the political monopoly formed by moderates and unionists, who
were authoritarian.
• The spread of democratic and republicans ideas based on the universal male
suffrage and increased rights and liberties
THE FIRST REPUBLIC
When Amadeo I abdicated in February 1873, the Cortes voted to form a republic. Most of
deputies were monarchistis and did not support the new form of goverment.
The lower class were happy with the result, republicans prepared a programme of social
and economical reforms.
The 1873 elections were won by the federal republicans. The Cortes drafted a federal
constitution that divided the legislative powers between the central goverment and the
federal republics. THIS NEVER TOOK EFFECT

• The divisions between the unitary and federal
• Dealing with Cuban insurrection and the beginning of a new Carlist war in 1872
• As social unrest increased, Cartagena proclaimed itself an independent canton of
the state in 1872
