The Flanker task (based on Eriksen and Eriksen, 1974)
, PSYC2092 COGNITIVE ASSIGNMENT
Abstract
The study is a further look into the flanker task experiments based upon the previous
work of Eriksen & Eriksen (1974) to gather further support for the idea of the effects incongruent
surroundings have on reaction times that have been previously theorized. This study used a
similar experiment as the original study but replaced the use of letters for arrows that either
pointed left or right with the time taken for a participant to input an answer recorded. This study
was able to gather such findings that further support the ideas of Eriksen & Eriksen as the
incongruent reaction times were noticeably longer than the congruent reaction times showing
that the incongruent stimuli does have an effect on item identification and perception.
