Survey – 2 studies – a pilot and the actual
Use of openness scale from the HEXACO Scale
Pilot used to remove questions that yielded insignificant responses.
Actual study used the remaining questions along with personality questions measuring openness.
Survey conducted on quadratics.
Analysis on SPSS, some answers analysed using reverse coding.
The research conducted took the form of a survey that measured an attitude scale along with an
additional psychological measure of a personality scale measuring the ‘openness’ personality trait
from the HEXACO scale. The participant group was gathered using snowball sampling, gathering 57
males and 58 females.
The survey was made using ‘Quadratics’ and the survey went through alterations after a pilot study
was held. The pilot study was conducted to refine items (questions) from the list using a
discriminatory index to highlight potential drastic differences in gathered scores. Items from the
item list were put into a discriminatory index grid with responses were totalled with the 3 highest
and lowest scoring items being removed from the list and a new list was constructed without the 6
items brought up in the index. The ‘openness’ scale was added at this point for the second half of
the survey.
The survey presented participants with an information page that outlined the aims of the study and
what was going to happen, it also gave participants the option to withdraw from the study.
Participants were first presented the attitude scale which was then followed up by the ‘openness’
scale. At the end a debrief page was shown, with an additional withdraw option.
Once completion of study the raw data was taken and analysed using reverse coding. Cronbach
Alpha’s was .88 for items measuring the attitudes towards Cannabis legalisation indicates good
internal reliability therefore no items were removed.
