Muscles of the Neck
Two groups of muscles are associated with the anterior aspect of the neck:
1. The suprahyoid muscles: located superior to the hyoid bone
2. The infrahyoid muscles: located inferior to the hyoid bone
1. Suprahyoid muscles;
1. Digastric Muscle,
2. Stylohyoid Muscle,
3. Mylohyoid Muscle.
Actions:
Elevate the hyoid bone, floor of the mouth, and tongue during swallowing.
Nerve supply: Ansa cervicalis (C1,2, 3)
2. Infrahyoid muscles:
(“strap” muscles because of their ribbon like appearance.
1. Omohyoid Muscle,
2. Sternohyoid Muscle and
3. Thyrohyoid Muscle
Actions:
Depress the hyoid bone and some move the larynx during swallowing and
speech.
Nerve supply: mostly by Ansa cervicalis (C1,2 AND 3).
