Unit 1
M2- Assess own communication and interpersonal skills for one to one and group
interaction
After completing the one to one interaction and group MDT, I have used my interpersonal
skills and my prior learning from previous tasks in this unit to effectively carry out the
interactions. I will know discuss the communication and will assess the skills used and how
well I carried them out in this piece.
Clearness of speech
When carrying out the one to one interaction with the service user, Mr Neil Down I was
aware that I had to be very sensitive about the content. This was something I had to
consider throughout the interaction. The sensitive information was delivering the news that
he had Cancer and to talk about the ongoing treatment plan and his future prognosis. It was
important that I used a clear and appropriately loud voice so the service user would be able
to hear me clearly. I did not use any complex words that couldn’t be understood by Mr
Down. I believe that I did this very effectively because the service user understood what I
said and he did not ask me to repeat anything that I had said or ask me to speak up.
Also in the group interaction which was an MDT (Multi Disciplined Team) meeting to discuss
a health care discharge plan, I played a key role. I was the Health Care Assistant in this task
and again I used a clear and an appropriately loud tone to make sure my concerns and
agreements were heard over Neil’s care plan. The team all had a role to play and I had lots
of aftercare information to share and was given the opportunity to do this. I think I did this
very well as everyone heard what I was saying within the group.
I would improve this next time by making sure that I was clear throughout the interaction
because when talking to Neil I did repeat words that I struggled to pronounce. And by
repeating these words Neil may have not understood what I was saying to him.
Tone of voice
, During the interaction I changed my tone to suit the mood. I started with a warming loud
tone and when telling Neil he has cancer went down to an empathetic tone to show
comfort. I think I did this well because the service user clearly felt comfortable whilst we
discussed and assessed his condition. An empathetic tone makes the service user feel very
calm and more relaxed which is vital in such a sensitive situation. And I could tell when I
used an empathetic tone Neil felt comfortable to talk about the cancer.
In the group conversation I used a firm suitable loud tone throughout the conversation to
put my points across about the treatment Neil was going to receive. I think I did this
effectively because my concerns about Neil was assessed and were taken into consideration.
With using a suitable tone the professionals listened to what I had to say making Neil getting
what he has requested for. Neil getting his needs met would allow him to feel comfortable
in his environment.
I think I would improve this next time by showing a more caring and empathetic tone when
in the one to one interaction with Mr Down. Because using a more caring tone of voice will
show Neil that I care about his health and want to provide him with the best care. Showing
Neil feels less worried about the situation.
Asking closed questions
When communicating with Neil I used closed questions like “can I help you in any other
way” I think by using this type of closed question I got a one word answer from Neil that
gave him reassurance. Also making sure all the information was taken in and checking with
Neil there was no more questions to ask so he knew the treatment process and what will
happen to him. I think I did this correctly because Neil answered with a no. Showing he had
no concerns about the treatment.
In the group interaction I used closed questions to make sure the other professionals
understood my ideas about Neil and the treatment I think he should receive. And they
thought the care being given was efficient for Neil. I think I done this effectively as the
professionals provided me with reassurance that Neil’s treatment will start soon and he will
receive what is suitable for him.
I think I could improve my one to one interaction and group interaction next time by using
more closed questions with Mr down to see more about his concerns. Also I could improve
my group interaction by using closed questions to address Neil as a person.
