Unit 2
P3- Describe the potential effects of discriminatory practice on those who use health or
social care services
Discriminatory practice is to discriminate against a person’s gender, sexual orientation,
culture, disability, medical condition, appearance, and nationality. The effects of this can
leave the person with low self-esteem and confidence. Potential unemployment, which
could lead to negative behaviors such as violence and criminality.
Low self-esteem
Self-esteem is how you see or feel about yourself having low self-esteem would be having a
negative opinion on yourself because of many reasons, which could be. The way you look,
stressful life experiences, anxiety, and unsupportive parents. Low self-esteem can happen to
service users because they are not receiving the care they deserve or because their
treatment is not working. An example of causing low self-esteem in health and social care
could be. An elderly resident at a care home has recently developed a cognitive disability in
their brain causing their personality to change. The care workers are aware of this but one
of the carers gossips to another carer of the man being disabled, which is overheard by his
visitor. Who tells the man what he has been labeled as. He reacts breaking down in tears
and hides away in his room. This then gives the man a negative opinion on himself thinking
he is not good enough causing him to stay in his room all day in the dark. This is
discrimination because the man is being singled out because of his disability. Affecting him
emotionally. The consequences for the care worker should be an apology to the man and
attending a course on discrimination.
Restricted opportunity
Restricted opportunity is taking away or restricting someone from an opportunity. This
could be restricting certain groups of people a service like a care home or not allowing a
youth medication because you do not like youths. Taking away opportunities from people
can cause them to feel upset and mistreated. Restricting an opportunity from an individual
can affect the organization because people might not want to use the service if someone is
being treated badly. An example of restricting opportunity from a service user could be. A
child who is Buddhist joins the local nursery the child has a specific plant-based diet as it is
disrespectful to his religion to eat meat. The staff says they will ensure the food he is given is
plant-based. However, during feed time the child is given a tuna sandwich that he eats but
then mentions it to his parents. They are upset because it is a strict rule not to eat meat in
this religion. The nursery is restricting the opportunity of the child to practice his religion by
being disrespectful and giving him meat when the family specified not to. The nursery
should apologize and next time the manager should ensure the child is not given meat. The
potential effect of this on the child could be poorer health because of the child-eating meat.

, Disempowerment
Disempowerment is when people or groups of people feel as if they have less power than
someone else or feel less confident in themselves. And discrimination can lead to people
also having low self-esteem and an example of disempowerment in health and social care
could be. An elderly woman at a care home has recently turned 100 and is starting to have
to rely on the carers doing everything for her. Which upsets her making her feel useless. A
care worker is annoyed at the resident as they have to do everything for her and mentions
she is not useful to society anymore. The resident takes this badly and feels less powerful
and excluded this is the patient being disempowered. Because the carer makes her feel less
powerful. The carer should apologize to the resident and be fired for discriminating against
her because of her incapability’s.
Violence
Violence can be caused by discrimination depending on how the individual takes the
discrimination. Violence can depend from person to person this violence can then cause
further consequences like criminality if the violence harms someone. An example of
violence in a health and social care situation could be. A 16-year-old black teenager has
recently moved into a new neighborhood and goes to register with the local GP. He speaks
with the receptionist who gives him a blunt entrance and sends him to the doctor. Then the
doctor refuses to speak to him because of his skin color. The boy acts violently and hits the
doctor, which results in the doctor hitting him back. This is discrimination on the boy
because of his skin color causing him to act violently because of how the doctor reacted
which will cause consequences on both individuals. Firstly, the doctor should be fired and
fined also I think he should do community service. The boy should be told warning of not to
act violently and provided support of how to deal with discrimination. This can cause fear
for the boy of the discrimination happening again.
Marginalization
Marginalization means making a group or class of people feel less important for example
not allowing a group of poor people an opportunity to use a health care service. When
marginalization occurs people are treated in an incorrect way. This can have the effect of
making them feel insignificant or useless. An example of marginalization in health and social
care could be. A group of gay men goes to the hospital all for check-ups about occurring
pain in their hearts. When the men arrive at the appointment their appointments are very
short and quick and they feel that the doctor is scared of them or is disgraced by them as he
seems not to care about the pains. The group leaves the hospital without any support to
help the pain and the doctor mentions he does not want to see them again. This is
discrimination to this group of people just because of their sexual orientation and
marginalization as they feel less important than everyone else. Causing worse effects on
them feeling depressed and loss of confidence. The doctor should have not been rude to
them as they like a different sex and he should go on a course about how to promote anti-
discriminatory practice and apologize to the men.
