EL RELIEVE EN ÉPOCA SUMERIAEn sumeria el relieve tiene una manifestación muy particular, pues se aplica a unas
pequeñas piezas cilíndricas realizadas en hueso, piedra o barro cocido. Estos
sellos, que generalmente se llevaban colgadas al cuello y servían como documento
de identidad se imprimían a modo de firma. Artística y técnicamente estaban muy
definidos, se destaca el esquematismo y la fuerza de sus líneas.
Los relieves de mayor tamaño corresponden a las estelas. Manifestación artística de
carácter conmemorativo realizada sobre una piedra, generalmente en forma de
paralelepípedo vertical que se remataba con un arco.
Los relieves descriptivos de estas estelas están situados unos sobre otros, en
franjas que se denominan “registros” y que están acompañados por inscripciones de
textos explicativos. Las figuras, que inicialmente son toscas y responden a la ley de
la torsión (la misma del relieve egipcio), van evolucionando y buscando el perfil
completo que se puede ver en el período caldeo.
