TEMPLO OVAL DE KHAFADYECada ciudad tendría su dinastía y su dios principal, Esta situación de conflictos daría lugar
a que se procediera a la fortificación de los diferentes núcleos urbanos sumerios y el
surgimiento de un nuevo modelo de arquitectura religiosa: el templo bajo o a ras del suelo.
Se ubicaba dentro de la ciudad y estaba rodeado de un muro de protección, para aislarlo de
las demás construcciones urbanas. El máximo exponente lo tenemos en el Templo oval de
Khafadye.
Se constituía por un amplio recinto rodeado de una doble
muralla oval. Dentro albergaba estancias destinadas a
funciones religiosas a las que se acompañaba de otras con
usos comerciales y administrativos. De esta manera se
puede observar la importancia que adquiere el templo en
relación a la función económica de la sociedad sumeria. El
templo se hallaba en un segundo recinto, una especie de
patio cerrado donde se ubicaban pilas y un pozo destinado a
abluciones rituales y también un altar de ofrendas al pie de la
escalinata por la que se accedía a una plataforma superior
de tres metros y medio de altura, sobre la que se ubicaba el templo. Como última novedad
aportada, tenemos el acceso en eje acodado, el cual consistía en la ubicación de la estatua
del dios dentro de la cella o sancta-sanctorum en ángulo recto respecto a la puerta de
entrada.
