in this P2 I will describe how Harrods identifies the skills that the employees need to carry out their
jobs. I will focus on the methods that Harrods uses such as a job analysis, training needs and
succession planning. I will also include at least 3 types of skills. The skills that I will be using are skill
acquisition, skills transferability and impact of technology.
Skill acquisition is that employees of a certain company gain their skills during work with the help of
training or other employees. This is very important for companies because if someone leaves the
company you need to make sure there is someone to replace that
person and do the work as good or maybe better than the old
employee. For the people working at a organisation and gaining
skills it’s a sort of motivation and therefor they are more efficient in
the work they do. For Harrods this is also very important because
there work a lot of elderly at Harrods with a lot of experience and a
great set of skills. Therefore it’s important to have a new person
being trained to replace the elder employee when he leaves
Harrods. Because training a person costs a lot of time and money
it’s important that the employee that is being trained does enquire
skills otherwise Harrods won’t continue the training.
The second skill that I will be explaining and relating to Harrods is skill transferability. Skill
transferability means how easily it is for employees to transfer their skill when they join another
company. For example it’s very easy as a doctor to first work at hospital A but when you don’t like it
there anymore you can go to hospital B and work there, and because of your study you don’t have to
learn how hospital B does things because it’s the same every ware. For Harrods it isn’t easy to
transfer skills that’s because if you first work at an normal shopping centre you don’t have to give the
customer the experience of his/her live. Because Harrods wants to give the best service possible and
they want their employees to know everything about the products they are selling it’s hard to adapt
your skills when coming there.
The final skill I will be explaining is the impact of technology. This means that by the use of
technology a lot of people lose their jobs. This can be by a lot of people ordering clothing online
rather than going to the store where you visit a lot of shops. It’s also for people working at the office
where things change for example there used to be people that wrote letters about 30-50 years ago
but they all lost their jobs because there was only one person needed to type these letters which was
a lot faster. For Harrods the impact of technology doesn’t affect them a lot because they want to give
the customer a live time experience through the service that the employees give. This particular
service where Harrods is famous for can’t be done by
machines or robots or something. But it has got a
little effect on Harrods because of the use of the
internet. Because Harrods also got a website where
they sell most of the products they also have in the
store a few people that where for working in the store
now have to for instance answer the telephones or
writhe emails to customers.
