A: Understand how to gather forensic evidence, the integrity to forensic investigation and the
importance of health and safety.

P1

Forensics is an area that includes the study of a crime scene in terms of carrying out
scientific tests and using various methods to find out who, what, when, how and where the
crime scene has happened.
Importance of documentation methods:
- Crime scene notes:
These are the first documents that are written by the police in case of a reported crime.
They are important because they are a proof of evidence for the police officer that wrote
them and also identifies the individuals in a short period of time. The notes should include a
description of the crime scene investigation in a step-by-step method. They are important
because they identify who, when, where, in what conditions and the progress of the
investigation in specific detail so that they can be used for future research into the crime
scene. They should only include facts and no conclusions or analysis.
- Sketches and photographs:
These documents are known to be the most effective and important documents because
they include all the basic and needed evidence that will be examined by the investigating
officer in order to imply a crime scene. The evidence covers significant details and precise
measurements of the area of crime and where it happened.
- Evidence labels:
These are also included as important documentation because they are used to label items
present at the crime scene. The labels help the people that will investigate the items at a
later date to be more accessible. The labels also include the last person that touched the
item and when did this happened.
- The cordon Log:
This in an important document because it keeps track of who enters and exists the crime
scene as it shows the reason why and when specific people have been at the crime scene
and who exactly the person is. The cordon log also helps emergency staff such as
paramedics, fire fighters and SSU as the person that enters the area to help the victim
and/or assess the situation might contaminate it. By keeping a record of persons will
eliminate them from potential interest.
- The case file:
Another important document which describes the whole crime scene investigation and has
all the details that were analysed and examined in order to prove that the scene has
happened this will include court hearings and proceedings. The case file is initially written by

, law enforcements, and they are important as proof of evidence for recording specific details
about the person that has committed the crime for future research.
- Laboratory examination forms:
This is another important form of recording the details of the examination that has been
provided by the forensic scientists to their laboratories and it is important to keep a track of
the details examined because without it there would not be a piece of evidence that
examination happened.
The consequences of incomplete documentation
In a forensic investigation is important that the methods gathering the documentation are
implied to collect all the data possible from the whole investigation. It is important that data
is collected throughout the investigation and any details are not missed as they can be
useful. There might be a chance that poor scene documentation will not be accepted when
attending court or/and missed information that has not been noted will mean that the
person responsible for the crime can get away with it.
P2
Structure of SSU:
The structure of the scientific support units (SSU) consists of the crime scene investigator
(CSI) which has the role of attending the crime scene in order to collect evidence found at
the scene. The evidence includes fingerprints, DNA and any footwear prints if the case of the
crime scene was happening outside. They can invite specialist photographers to take
pictures of evidence found at the scene so that they get a clear picture of the evidence and
therefore they have a proof that the evidence was real.
If the crime is seen as complex and has major effects this will investigated by the crime
scene coordinators.
The crime scene also needs to be managed by a crime scene manager.
Also, if any evidence is found it is examined by the forensic experts that work in the
laboratories. They also have the role of deciding if a forensic process should be applied
inside or outside and also analyse the situation.
M2
Importance of SSU:
The importance of the SSU is to gather all the evidence found at the crime scene such as
DNA that might be found on the weapons or/and firearms that were examined to identify
the person handling them.
