Paper 1 - SOCIAL INFLUENCE
Explanations of Obedience: Agentic State and Legitimacy of Authority
What do I need to know?
How does agentic state explain obedience?
How can the agentic state be evaluated?
How does legitimacy of authority explain obedience?
How can legitimacy of authority be evaluated?
Questions to answer in class:
2. Why did people obey in Milgram’s study?
- Agentic state : participants underwent an agentic shift - gave up personal
responsibility and were acting on behalf of the experimenter ( authority figure)
- Legitimacy of authority : participants obeyed the experimenter as he was a legitimate
authority figure. The variations showed that when legitimacy of authority was
removed (e.g. removing uniform), obedience decreased.
Notes
Agentic State: where a person acts on behalf of an authority figure and feels no personal
responsibility for their actions.
Autonomous individuals : behaving independently, according to their own principles with a
sense of personal responsibility.
