Is the magnitude of the IOLab’s acceleration on the ramp

Introduction:
Our group is answering the question, “Is the the IOLab’s acceleration on the ramp the
same on the way up as it is on the way down?”. In other words, this experiment will test
whether the device will have the same rate of change of velocity over time in both the +y/+x
and -y/-x directions. We expect that the device will have a have acceleration when it moves
upwards and downwards because the forces acting on the device are aligned in different
directions as the device moves upwards or downwards.
Methods:
1. Place an IOLab device at the bottom of a ramp and give it a quick shove so that it rolls up
and then back down again, as demonstrated in Figure 1.

2. Collect data on the acceleration of the device from the time it begins its travel up the
ramp until it returns to its original position at the bottom of the ramp.
Results:
Trial 1 data of acceleration while the IOLab device goes up the ramp was collected when the
velocity of the device was greater than zero. We took the average acceleration when the
velocity was positive as shown in the screenshot below.
Trial 1 data of acceleration while the IOLab device goes down the ramp was collected when the
velocity of the device was less than zero. We took the average of the acceleration when the
velocity was negative as shown in the screenshot below.
