The Effects of the Environment on a business
In this assignment I have been asked to select and investigate a large business that trades in
the European Union and use this research to write a report that evaluates the effects of the
environment of that business.
The Business that I have chosen is H&M. H&M is a Swedish clothing company which sells
fast-fashion clothing for men, women, teenagers, and children, it is a multinational store
and it is the second-largest global clothing retailer.
The task brief that I received says that I will need to investigate a large business that trades
in the European Union, to do this I will search the environment in which the H&M operates
so that I am able to obtain enough information on how H&M has responded to past changes
and evaluate how they may react to any future changes.
Another way I will investigate H&M is by using the external, this includes Political (which
refers to the politics within the business for example anything involving government),
Economic (Which refers to costs and supply and demand) , Fiscal (Referring to Government
revenue especially taxes), Monetary (Refers to money or a certain currency), Government
policies (which is spending welfares that include public education, highways and public
safety), Social attitude to saving, spending, and debt(Which means how race, ethnicity,
nationality or gender impacts your decision on how you save spend and deal with debt),
Social responsibility(Which means that individuals and companies have a duty to act in the
best interests of their environment and society as a whole), Technological change(Which
means someone invents or improves a product or process, which is then used to get a
bigger reward for the same amount of work), Environmental factors(Refer to the climate,
pollution and availability of non-renewable goods), Ethical trends (Refers to implementing
appropriate business policies and practices), and Legal environment(which is product
transportation, profit margins, and viability of certain markets are all examples of things
which may be influenced by legal factors).
When looking at the internal environment I will look at corporate culture and corporate
social responsibility (CSR), What influences supply and demand and price including elasticity
of demand and the different market structures that the business operates in, their impact
on pricing and output decisions and the business’ response to these.
P4/M3: H&M business environment is currently not the most health because of multiple
factors like the fact that their staff is not treated great, in the recent years they have
improved their employee treatment but it is still not great.

H&M have a matrix management business organisational structure which means that
teams will report to multiple leaders, using this structure helps keeps open communication
between teams, it also can help companies create better products and improve their
services.
The table below shows a bit about the business environment of H&M and it also show some
internal and external factors that effected H&M pre- Covid-19 and Brexit as well as post-
Covid-19 and Brexit.
