Level of Class: Lesson Objectives: and freer activities
Teenagers (14-16 ➢ In group, students will practise producing form communicatively
years old) during a chain game
➢ Students are already familiar with present simple and future using
‘will’.
Nationality/First French - French ➢ Students have a basic knowledge of grammatical terminology such as
Assumed Knowledge:
Language: language subject, verb, auxiliary verb, base verb, negative and question forms.
➢ Some students might have heard the term first conditional.
➢ It is common that students use ‘will’ in the if-clause since the 1st
conditional is used to talk about future events.
Solution: Using some examples, I will demonstrate which part of the
sentences are the if-clause and the main clause. I will highlight ‘will’
in the main clause and rename this clause as a ‘will-clause’ which will

help them to remember that the will is not used in the if-clause. I will
remind the students that the same structure is used in their mother
tongue French.
➢ Students might not hear the contraction between subject and
auxiliary verb. (e.g., I’ll let it go)
, Solution: Using more drilling, I will make sure that they can say and
hear the contraction.
➢ Students might have a hard time grasping the meaning and function
of the target language. They might be confused and think that the
main clause should describe what to do to make the if-clause possible
(e.g., if I want to travel, I will work hard)
Solution: Using some concept questions and the timeline to show
when the events happen and in which tense, will help to check
students understanding of the meaning and structure. Also, starting
the activity by listing their dreams and building the first conditional
together, will help them to remember that the purpose of the
main-clause is the result of the if-clause. Some other examples can
help them to remember that (e.g., If you study hard, you will pass
your exam). This will be of course followed by intensive practice of
the target language
➢ Students might forget to put the comma when it’s needed.
Solution: By writing on the board the 2 ways that the first conditional
can be built, I will remind the students in which form the comma is
required. This could be done by using different colours and
highlighting the position of the `if` and the `comma`. Also, writing
activities in the semi-controlled practice will help to get use to put
the comma in the right place
➢ 2 handouts for the controlled practices: 1 fill the gap and list of
questions)
➢ Board markers in different colours
Number of Students: 12 Materials: ➢ Coursebooks / Homework
➢ Copy of board plan for teacher to use during presentation
