Topic Book 1 General
information Animal Farm
Make a proper description of the following, use words from the 1 st vocabulary package. Explain why you
chose to describe him/ her that way.
Best features:
For this exercise I want to talk about the character Boxer. Boxer is a carthorse. Horses are often appreciated for their
strength. This is also the case with Boxer. He is the biggest (almost 6 feet tall) and the strongest of the fam. That’s why the
other animals treat him with respect.

He is described as the farm’s most dedicated and loyal animal. He is hard working and faithful. Boxer is very driven. For
example: he believes that any problem can be solves when he works harder. He is not very smart but believes the education
is important. That’s why he continues to study the letters of the alphabet during his retirement.
He puts in a lot of effort for the collective and sticks with his word.
Worst features:
Boxer ‘s great strength is matched by his naiveté and innocence. This you notice when you read about one of his actions.
During an incident, when humans try to take back the farm, Boxer kicks one of the stable boys with his hoof, killing him
instantly. He only did this to protect his friends, who he follows and trusts. When he finds out the boy is dead, he
immediately explains that this was not his intention. He talks about the incident long after it happened.

Boxer is not very intelligent. In the book you learn this when he explains that he can only remember four letters of the
alphabet at a time. You also notice that he is only able to think in simple slogans. The sentence “Napoleon is always right” is
often said by Boxer.

He is very dependent on a big leader. This is very childlike behaviour. When something happens, Boxer does not put himself
first but the wish of his leader. This happens when the windmill has to be rebuild. Boxer is the strongest animal, he knows
this. That is why he knows it will mostly be his job to rebuild. However, Boxer has been shot during an incident. He still
decided so work on the windmill and falls, injuring himself so bad that he will never be able to work again. After it happened
he tells his friends that he hopes they will build the windmill without him. He thinks he will be able to retire after his incident.
This shows us his innocence, the reader already knows that Napoleon has no intention to take care of an old horse, unable to
work. In the end, Boxer ‘s innocence is what leads him to his death.
Appearance:
Boxer is a very large Carthorse. In the books they let us know, he is eighteen hands high.

Boxer is very strong, as strong as two horses put together. A white stripe runs down his nose. This gives him a strange
appearance.
