UNIT 16
P1
Introduction
Supermarket Morrison’s, has changed a great deal within the last 8-10 years.
Morrison’s has evolved significantly from becoming a smaller chain, mainly in
northern England, to acquiring Safeway and establishing himself now as one of
Britain's leading high street retailers. Morrison’s would have had to change the way
it works and deliver new goods and services to keep the momentum going.

Internal factors
Technological change
The technological change over the past 8-10 years has helped Morrison expand
massively, self-checkout machines is a prime example of this. Self-checkout
machines have been implemented in many of Morrison’s stores over the past 8-10
years in which makes it more convenient for customers who are in a rush as they can
scan their own products keeping them satisfied as they will not need to stand in
queue for a prolonged period of time. Morrison’s will also benefit from this as they
are able hire less employees on the tills as the machines are there for customers to
scan their products by themselves and Morrison’s will only need a couple of
employees monitoring the machines. This will help the Morrison’s meet their goal of
becoming the most profitable retail seller in the UK as they are cutting as much
expenses as possible by limiting staff and using machines instead which are
monitored by a couple of employees.
Work force changes (age, gender, ethnicity and ability)
The workforce change has helped Morrison expand as they are able to hire
employees that are any gender, any age above 16 and even hire the disabled which
have skills than are able to carry out their specific job role, not only this but
Morrison’s will show equality and will accept candidates which meet the criteria of
the job role. This would mean that people roles within the business will stay the
same however, multiple types of people will be able to cover those roles e.g.
employees on the till must a have a grade C in both Maths and English and can
fulfilled by whatever skin, age and sexuality they are.
Location of products
The new Location of products has helped Morrison’s expand as over the past decade
we have seen Morrison’s opening new storages which they can put their food in,
from their branches will be delivered the products which they require making it
more convenient as more storages have been opened meaning there will be more
groceries, accessories for the customers to choose from. This would mean human

, resources must know the strategy of when products are available and have been
shipped in from the manufacture so they are able to pick it up.

External factors
Government policies
Government polices are something which Morrison’s are unable to control however
after the 2008 bank crisis, Morrison’s started to expand and gain a larger customer
base. This was through following government policies and see what was legal and
illegal, human resources would need to follow all the legal as otherwise it could of
set Morrison’s back, since then they have made very minimal mistakes, hence why
they are in the place which they are in currently (top 5 grocery retailers in the UK).
Employees must follow government polices as if they don’t Morrison’s are more
likely to be prone on making mistakes which would mean that their competitors
would have an advantage; this indicates that the strategy of how they avoid illegal
government policies must be well thought thru.
Demand for products and services
Due to the population in the UK increasing year by year, Morrison’s will find it easier
to attract customers as majority of the public shop at grocery store hence goods
such as Milk and Bread will be essential for Morrison’s to have, also toilet paper and
kitchen rolls are also needed. Due to the increase in demand and service the
machinery and the amount of employees has been upped too this is because for
Morison’s to expand they must buy/ invest in more of what they already have
making sure they do not go out of stock, this would mean the route for employees
will be much more stricter as if products are not moved quick enough Morrison’s
could lose potentially millions nationally. E.g. 6pm if bakery products are not sold,
Morrison’s will list products at a deducted price to attract customers to buying their
products.
Employee expectations e.g. part time and full time
Over the past decade the overall expectations of Morrison’s has increased, this will
directly mean that employees will play a huge part in Morrison’s expectations as
they are ones who makes sure everything is running smoothly within the store. Over
the years, Morrison’s have been looking for more part time and full time employees
as they want to keep their business expectations as high as possible and by doing
this it will prevent the chances of any huge mistakes, having this will allow
Morrison’s to make a route as set it accordingly depending what shifts need to be
covered.
