I can’t believe this class is coming to an end only a few more to go and we will soon be
nurse practitioners. As I reflect on this class, I feel like it has prepared me not only in these
particular outcomes and competencies but it has helped me develop skills in many other areas.
Chamberlain College of Nursing Program Outcome #5
Advocates for positive health outcomes through compassionate, evidence-based, collaborative
advanced nursing practice. (Extraordinary nursing)
Throughout this course and clinical site combined, I have been able to work towards the
nursing program outcome #5, which is advocating positive health outcomes through
compassionate, evidence-based, collaborative advanced nursing practice. According to Power
(2016), caring is a central characteristic of nursing, defined as 'the mental, emotional and
physical efforts of the nurse to respond to and support individuals’. As nurses I feel like we all
have that one instinct in us, and its to want to help people and always be compassionate towards
others. This class has helped me better understand my patients when they are sick and how to
care for them through evidence based practice which will significantly increase my patient’s
health outcomes. Providing evidence-based care is the foundation to successful nursing practice.
Through the weekly discussions and study case in this course I was able to expand my
knowledge about different disease and appropriate guidelines according to evidence-based
practice. An example of this in my clinical site was when a patient came in for hypertension and
was already on medication but wasn’t working for them. I was able to follow evidence based
practice guidelines and discuss with my instructor the best way to care for the patient. With
collaborating practice from the physician and nurse practitioner, we were all able to discuss
these side effects and according to the patients other list of medications we developed a plan to
keep the blood pressure in control and see the patient again in 2 weeks.
