Then write an essay analyzing how the author establishes the narrator’s relationship to
the setting through the use of literary elements and techniques. Identify the topic,
position, and reasoning—or "so what?"—parts of your thesis.

In Joseph Conrad’s novella Heart of Darkness, the reader interprets the journey to
the Belgian Congo through the perspective of the young Marlow. Conrad has Marlow
view the sky as he’s leaving Britain as a “mournful gloom” to foreshadow what is yet to
come in the rest of the story. As the narrator sets off on his passage, he begins to
recognize the hierarchy already set in place, with the most appraised being the lawyer.
Joseph Conrad wrote a story full of foreshadowing hints to the theme of the story that
in a world of darkness it’s easy to fall victim to these dark traits.
When exposed to an environment that doesn’t punish a person for their cruelty,
they will act as they please for as long as they are allowed. The idea of imperialism was
to “civilize” natives because Europe thought they were better than the rest of the world.
However, once people like Kurtz got to these “uncivilized” places, without the
constraints of society their underlining dark nature took hold, and their true impulses for
cruelty were left unchecked. Joseph Conrad tried to illustrate the madness of
imperialism theme through the dark setting of the Belgian Congo. Marlow views a
“mournful gloom” as he starts his journey to the Congo possibly hinting that the
darkness comes from Europe and spread its way to the Congo. The author also used
this as a way of foreshadowing the despair throughout the rest of the story.
Conrad hints at the hierarchy set in place by society on the ship to the Congo.
Typically, during that time period, doctors and lawyers were regarded very highly, which
the author shows by giving the lawyer the only cushion. Thus, illustrating how Marlow
still abides by the hierarchy set in place by society and later in the story when others
seemed to have abandoned these rules in the Congo. “Hunters for gold or pursuers of
fame, they all had gone out on that stream, bearing the sword, and often the torch,
messengers of the might within the land, bearers of a spark from the sacred fire”
Marlow observes for himself that men go in search of gold and fame, but what Marlow
is too naive to understand is that in gaining those riches, those men had extorted that
natives of that land to do so. People like Kurtz have become corrupted by the despair in
the Congo and take positions of power, which they typically wouldn’t have because
they’re not as important to a civilized society.
In Joseph Conrad’s novella, Heart of Darkness, the setting of the Congo is heavily
tied to his theme of corruption in the story. On his journey to the Belgian Congo, Marlow
takes notice of certain elements that would later be elaborated further on in the story
such as the madness of imperialism and the necessary social constraints of society.
One of the elements that Marlow notices is when the lawyer receives a cushion because
of his importance to the general public. In the Congo, the lawyer is of no importance, but
