Unit 4: Laboratory Techniques and their Application
A: Understand the importance of health and safety in
scientific organisations.

Introduction:
In this study, I'll look at a scientific organisation and its activities. I'm going to investigate the
company's health and safety policies and how they're carried out. I'm going to analyse the companies inside
the company that work with hazardous materials to see if they give adequate training and protective
equipment.

Organisation: Pfizer:
Pfizer is one of the most innovative biopharmaceutical companies in the world,
researching, developing, and delivering over 150 medicines and vaccines to help millions of people in the
United Kingdom and throughout the world live better lives. The company sells drugs to treat a wide range
of illnesses, including cardiovascular, metabolic, and pain problems, as well as cancer, inflammation,
immunological disorders, and rare diseases. Contract manufacturing, sterile injectable pharmaceuticals,
biosimilars, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), and sterile injectable pharmaceuticals are among the
services it provides.
Pfizer believes that protecting the health, safety, and well-being of their employees is critical to achieving
their objectives. They're still working on a comprehensive injury and sickness prevention programme for the
workplace that encourages employee participation and productivity.

Potential hazards and health and safety measures:
Consumer Healthcare, Inflammation & Immunology,
Internal Medicine (neuroscience and pain, as well as cardiovascular and metabolic), Oncology, Rare
Disease, and Vaccines are the six business units that make up Pfizer Innovative Health. Although the
potential threats and health and safety practises in different areas differ, they are all equally crucial in
safeguarding the company's employees. Pharmaceutical manufacturers and their employees, like those in
other businesses, are concerned about their health and safety. In certain cases, the hazards are comparable
to those seen in ordinary industrial operations. The dangers are particularly unique to the pharmaceutical
sector in several cases. Pharmaceutical producers, like other businesses, utilise hazard controls and risk
mitigations, encompassing all levels of the hierarchy of controls, from elimination to administrative controls
such pharmaceutical safety training and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

, The relevant line manager conducts risk evaluations, which are subsequently analysed by health and safety
experts. First responders who have received proper training are present in every facility. Contact
information for first responders can be found on notice boards, induction packets, and webpages. This is a
very effective health and safety management system that adheres to all applicable regulations. Several
workplace problems have been highlighted as necessitating their own procedures. In addition to the
standard occupational health and safety hazard types found in many manufacturing facilities (slip, tripping,
tipping, moving devices, improper lifting and subsequent back injuries, etc.), pharmaceutical manufacturing
often follows: It poses such dangers: flammable or flammable materials, harmful chemicals, biological
hazards, repetitive movements and / or ergonomic stress from awkward work areas, and others (such as
sharp glass).Only a few examples are biologics, stress management, radiation protection, and work in
individual tasks.

The organisation ensures that health and safety are taken seriously by inspecting the enterprises. At each
location, health and safety checks are performed on a regular basis. They act as a safety net in case
something goes wrong. Working equipment, who uses the area, operating tactics, maintenance, and
cleaning methods, among other things, are all examined during inspections.

Pfizer’s health and safety policy:
Even with an exceptional health record and a good safety record, there is
always room for improvement when it comes to the safety of Pfizer employees. Ergonomic injuries are still
the most common type of accident at Pfizer, especially in manufacturing and R&D. To reduce lost-time and
total injury and sickness rates, we've been working on improving and prioritising education activities. We
want to be able to: Maintain effective management of fundamentally high-risk operations. You can protect
your co-workers’ health and well-being by properly limiting workplace exposure. Have strict systems and
controls in place to protect employees from chemical exposure.

Demanding the implementation of company-wide safety standards that focus on higher-risk areas — many
of our goods begin with the formulation and processing of hazardous materials like volatile solvents and
flammable powders. Our scientists and engineers work on green chemistry and green technology projects
to find solutions to eliminate the use of these resources. When a substitution or deletion is not an option,
we analyse the safety of processes and designs, establish maintenance programmes, and share hazard
information and management strategies across Pfizer.

Customizing standards for unique company activities - we have created standards that address specific
hazards to safety at our offices, with our contractor base, in our external supply, and in our laboratories. To
