The effects of Technology
What do most teenagers have at their hands today? Technology. Technology can be harmful and
erode teenagers' minds because it can affect their academics, technology can also affect teenagers socially
and personally.
For example, through technology, the internet can be a wonderful place for teenagers to get updated
about what's happening all around them. Because of how easy it is to get access to the internet;
misinformation can be spread quite easily. To prove this, a study was shown that misinformation about the
coronavirus was spreading throughout twitter.
“A Twitter dataset was searched for tweets containing hashtags indicating belief in the
"5GCoronavirus" conspiracy theory, which states that the COVID-19 pandemic is a result
of, or enhanced by, the enrollment of the 5G mobile network. Despite the absence of any
scientific evidence, the "5GCoronavirus" conspiracy theory propagated rapidly through
Twitter, beginning at the end of January, followed by a peak at the beginning of April, and
ceasing/disappearing approximately at the end of June 2020”. (Julian Kauk, Helene Kreysa
and Stephan R. Schweinberger)
Technology can also allow teenagers to take advantage of it to cheat it school. As stated from
above, accesing the internet is quite easy for teenagers. Because of this, students can cheat by
spreading and searching for test answers. “In California, for example, hundreds of state
assessments were flagged for review last school year after students posted photos of exams or
test questions on social-networking sites like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter”. (Michelle R.
Davis) This goes to show that technology can be an issue as some teenagers can use it as a
device for cheating.
The use of technology can be easily used as a mechanism for bullying. Cyberbullying to
be more specific. Teenagers can take advantage of technology and the internet and use it to bully
others. A report done in Canada shows that 1 in 5 young Canadians have been cyberbullied.
“Here in Canada, 1 in 5 young Canadians have also been reportedly cyberbullied”. (Monica
Lewinsky) This goes to show that technology can change the behaviour of teens and allow them
to cyberbully others. Moreover, teenagers can become insecure because of technology.
Technology can allow teenagers to access all different kinds of websites through the use of the
internet. It also allows teenagers to come across different social media platforms. Social media
can have a great negative affect when young and impressionable teens come across it. “In the

hands of the young and impressionable, the vulnerable and the naive, the internet can result in
mental and physical harm. It is also stated that “Young women in particular are suffering,
targeted by cyberbullies and those who would exploit their insecurities about sex and body
image.” (Independent Digital News and Media Limited)
Not only can technology affect teenagers socially, it can affect them personally too.
Technology addiction. Technology addiction is a problem with most teeangers. A teenagers’
time is valuable. Teenagers shouldn’t spend their whole day with their eyes glued to their
phones. Being addicted to technology can greatly affect one’s life, some of the effects include:
shorter attention spans, lack of sleep, and a decrease in learning ability.
“Some parents and psychologists are concerned about parents who allow their
toddlers to play with their smart devices, or who buy their adolescents smart
devices. One risk is that children, who already have short attention spans, may
end up with even shorter attention spans as adults because they have grown
accustomed to quickly jumping from one piece of information to the next -- from
a game on a phone to a text message, to an email and back, for example”.
(Gilstein, Julia)
Even though technology can be used as way for connecting with other people, technology can
also cause teenagers to disconnect and become socially isolated from the rest of the world. In
short, a study was done to prove this by randomly selecting families and giving them computers
and instruction use on the internet.
“After 1 to 2 years, increased use of the internet was associated with decreased
family communication and reduced size of local social circle. In addition, the
participants experienced increased loneliness and depression. Increases in
loneliness and decreases in social support were particularly pronounced
for the youth. The latter finding highlights the importance of studying Internet
use among adolescents, particularly since it is increasing dramatically among
this age group. ” ( Christopher E. Sanders, Tiffany M. Field, Miguel
Diego and Michele Kaplan)
Technology can have a strong grasp on a teenagers mind. It can affect teenagers with their
academics, and it can also affect teengaers socially and personally. In the end, less time with
