Why you have structured the lesson in the way that you have
Since I am a qualified foundation phase teacher and have experience teaching younger learners I
chose to present a lesson plan to younger learners. The ages in my class ranged from 6-8 years old,
and my students are only starting to learn the new language. The lesson I have planned for them is
not only just to learn but also to have fun while they are learning. The aim of my lesson is to teach
vocabulary of family members. I used PPP structure for my lesson since it is a relatively simple and
logical way of structuring your lessons and it can be combined with other teaching techniques to
produce a full lesson adjusted to your specific learners’ needs.
Explanation on why you have chosen this topic, including what you understand about this topic
with regards to your learners, and the challenges this topic may present (i.e. potential
difficulties).
I chose to teach vocabulary on family members because the learners have only started learning
English and it is an easy topic to cover and they can relate to their own family members. The learners
can use this new vocabulary in their everyday lives by greeting their family members every morning
in English for example ‘good morning mother’. As a teacher of a new language it was very important
to convey the lesson in a simple and easy way so that the learners understand what I teaching. With
the topic came some challenges though. The learners might have been familiar with the different
family members but they know it in their own language and not in English. To ensure learners have a
clear understanding of what I am teaching, I used flash cards and a big family poster to do small
activities and I used drilling to ensure correct pronunciation. I also had the challenge of keeping
them focused. To keep a young learner focussed is not the easy, a young learner wants to play and
have fun. To overcome this challenge I kept my lesson fun and also exciting for the young learners to
make them want to come back to the class and also learn while they are having fun.
What each activity will contribute towards the learning aims and how this will be achieved
Throughout my lesson I have a range of different activities. The reason for the different activities is
to ensure that the learners learn and remember the new vocabulary and pronounce it correctly.
Learners learn best when they are having fun and will it will be a memorable lesson.
To warm up the class I asked learners to stand in a horse shoe ensuring everyone can see the
projector screen clearly. Play the hello song on the projector and the learners sing and dance along.
This relaxes learners and makes them excited for the lesson to come.
In my first activity I used eliciting to introduce the new vocabulary. I put a big poster up of a family
tree with missing pieces and flashcards with pictures of family members. We as a class put the family
tree together and I encouraged them to use the new vocabulary in a short sentence. Then I made
sure they understand by asking learners who is this pointing to a picture. This is a fun activity since
we worked together and we can put the poster up on the wall for the rest of the year and this also
gives me an idea of how much they understand about the lesson aim.
My second activity was to divide learners into groups of 4. I gave each group a copy of flashcards
with pictures of family members and a paper with a family tree with blank blocks. The learners had
to work together to arrange the flashcards into a family tree using the poster on the board to help
