LAB 1: ERROR ANALYSIS AND ORIENTATION Ana Mahadevan Texas A&M University College Station, TX 77843, US. Abstract: This report covers the theory behind error estimation, error propagation and uncertainty using the tabulated data provided using the tracking camera. As the wooden rectangle moves over the air table, its positions are repeatedly measured in order to compute the length and width. Using these measurements, we calculate the total area of the rectangle and its uncertainty. These values are computed by error propagation and are compared with the individual measurements. This exercise provides an idea of the uncertainty and its application in a real-world scenario. Keywords: uncertainty, propagation of error, standard deviation 1. Introduction The goal of the lab is to exemplify measurement of any properties and how they vary with a margin or possible range of values. Error propagation was used to derive accurate and precise calculations for the given data. The data was collected, analyzed and manipulated using the following formulas: • distance between two points (1): = √(x2-x1)2+(y2−y1)2 • standard deviation (2): • propagation of error (3): • standard error of mean (4): • area (5): A= Length*Width • mean (6): ∑xi/n 2. Experimental Procedure For us to calculate the area of the rectangle made of wood, we place three different colored stickers on the three corners to monitor their positions. The colored stickers make it so that the tracking camera can amass an accurate reading of their positions. The terminal is used to collect the data. The examples directory is where this data is stored. To use the tracking camera, the tracking directory is used, which records the different tracking stickers and provide the pixel information. Python 3 is facilitating this process. The rectangle is then placed on the air board and allowed to move freely. This provided several different points of data for more variance. Ensure the board is within the tracking frame. Once a sufficient number of data points is collected, turn off the air board and terminal. 3. Results and Analysis:

LAB 1: ERROR ANALYSIS AND ORIENTATION

Abstract:
This report covers the theory behind error estimation, error propagation and uncertainty using the tabulated data
provided using the tracking camera. As the wooden rectangle moves over the air table, its positions are repeatedly
measured in order to compute the length and width. Using these measurements, we calculate the total area of the
rectangle and its uncertainty. These values are computed by error propagation and are compared with the individ-
ual measurements. This exercise provides an idea of the uncertainty and its application in a real-world scenario.

Keywords: uncertainty, propagation of error, standard deviation
1. Introduction
The goal of the lab is to exemplify measurement of any properties and how they vary with a margin or possible
range of values. Error propagation was used to derive accurate and precise calculations for the given data. The data
was collected, analyzed and manipulated using the following formulas:

• distance between two points (1):
𝑑 = √(x2-x1)2+(y2−y1)2
• standard deviation (2):

• propagation of error (3):

• standard error of mean (4):

• area (5): A= Length*Width
• mean (6): ∑xi/n

2. Experimental Procedure
For us to calculate the area of the rectangle made of wood, we place three different colored stickers on the
three corners to monitor their positions. The colored stickers make it so that the tracking camera can amass
an accurate reading of their positions. The terminal is used to collect the data. The examples directory is
where this data is stored. To use the tracking camera, the tracking directory is used, which records the dif-
ferent tracking stickers and provide the pixel information. Python 3 is facilitating this process.

The rectangle is then placed on the air board and allowed to move freely. This provided several different
points of data for more variance. Ensure the board is within the tracking frame.
Once a sufficient number of data points is collected, turn off the air board and terminal.
