Topic 1: Resource Management

1. Discuss an example of when interchanging resources would be appropriate.
An example of when interchanging resources would be important is using your resource
of knowledge and skills in exchange for extra time. An example of this is assisting your
little brother with his homework in exchange for him to do your household chores so
you can have more time to yourself.
2. Explain the effect of socioeconomic status on the ability of individuals to access health
services
Socioeconomic status is a measure of someone’s total income and employment status.
Socioeconomic status can affect an individual’s access to health services as it may
impact on the quality of treatment you receive and how quickly you are tended to. For
example, an individual with a high socioeconomic status might have private health care
and is able to access treatment in a private room with a doctor of choice. In contrast, an
individual who has a low socioeconomic status may not be able to afford Medicare, and
therefore is not able to access Australia’s standard health services and may need to end
up paying more.
3. Describe how informal support is beneficial to a pregnant mother.
Informal support is beneficial to a pregnant mother as this is inclusive of friends, family
and neighbours assisting the mother with her specific needs. The pregnant mother may
have more previous children that need caring for while the mother needs to sleep or go
to work, and neighbours, friends or grandparents can offer babysitting services while the
mother tends to these needs. Informal support may also come to be beneficial when the
mother is heavily pregnant and is not able to move around as easily. Informal support
can assist the mother here by shopping for her, so she does not have to do it herself.
4. Explain how meeting your Specific Needs assists your wellbeing?
Specific needs are one’s safety and security, health, education, sense of identity,
employment, and adequate standard of living and how successfully these needs are
met. All these specific needs will impact on an individual’s overall wellbeing.
Safety and security are how safe an individual feels in their home, on the street, in
school and in the workplace. Meeting the needs of safety and security can be met, for
example, by ensuring that there are locks on the front and back doors of the house. This
enhances safety and security as the individual is now assured that an outsider cannot
break into the house.
Health is holistic and involves an individual’s physical, mental, social, cultural, and
spiritual health. An individual who has bad physical health, so is out of shape and may
suffer with depression and anxiety, this will affect all their other aspects of health too
and this means their specific needs are not being met. If another individual is very fit,

, healthy and eats well, it is highly likely that their other dimensions of health are
successfully tended to as well and their overall health is well. This individuals’ specific
needs are being met and this will positively impact on wellbeing.
Education will affect your wellbeing as if you have a high level of education,
you are also able to achieve a well-paying job that can assist you well into the future. If
an individual does not have a high level of education, then they are not able to achieve
what may be considered a standard employment status and this will affect their income
and socioeconomic status. Consequently, this will negatively impact their overall
wellbeing and mental state.
Holding a sense of identity is vital because it means that the individual is in touch with
their spirituality and holds a purpose. It gives them meaning and a reason to stay alive.
For example, a person’s sense of identity may be that they are a happy artist with two
children and in a healthy relationship with their partner. For this individual their kids,
partner and art are why they are on the planet and what their identity is. An individual
who does not have a sense of identity and purpose may feel lost and useless and this
can negatively impact on mental health.
Employment is important in one’s life because it can impact on their socioeconomic
status and therefore the quality of life they can achieve. Employment is closely related
to education and these will highly impact each other. An individual who has a job they
highly enjoy will love waking up every day to go into that workplace, this will give them
a high mental state and will make it even easier to achieve an income every week. If an
individual does not enjoy their employment, it may make it more difficult to get up
every day which can impact on their overall wellbeing.
Adequate standard of living is one’s access to proper food, shelter, and water. This can
impact on wellbeing as it may determine how healthy and safe an individual is. Basic
food, water and shelter needs is the basis to a healthy life and a happy life.
5. Discuss how using the SMART principle impacts setting goals and if the goal is
achievable. Provide examples.
The SMART principle stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time
Based. The SMART principle impacts setting goals and achieving them because it
encourages the individual to record a proper and realistic goal that is not out of reach.
For example, a goal might be, ‘save money’, and this is unrealistic as there is no set
amount and time frame. A more realistic approach could be, ‘For one year, I want to
save $100 a week so that I am able to achieve $5,200 in a year’s time. I will do this by
opening up a savings account that I cannot take money out of and can only out money
in’.
6. Identify and explain ONE non-human resource that could help a person with travelling
to visit a friend in another state.
