Unit 5 teamwork and leadership
Why are groups or teams formed?

There are two main reasons:

It is much simpler to control a group than many individuals, and then use the skills of all team members to make a
‘common sense of purpose.’ These could be to.

achieve goals, increase efficiency and productivity, to be innovative, to meet/achieve targets,

to manage and support change if they all accept the group’s rules and discipline.

The second reason is to perform a task that cannot be achieved by an individual alone.

Formal Teams

Created deliberately to conduct specific tasks.

Created to deal with a specific problem; usually disbanded when problem is dealt with.

Informal Teams:

Appear whenever people come together and interact regularly.

Develop within the formal organizational structure, formed by employees, and are not supervised by the management

There are many types of teams within these categories….

Formal Teams

Project Team-A group of people who come together to work on one or more projects. A project manager often leads the
team.

Permanent Team-Not dissolved once a task is conducted. For example, the human resources team, operation team,
administration team.

Temporary Team -Usually formed for a brief time (can also be an informal team).

Task Force -Formed for a special purpose. For example, the government appoints special teams to investigate critical issues
like bomb blasts, terrorist attacks

Committee -Individuals come together to form a committee and work on any matter, either permanently or temporary.
