Working title of my Extended Project.
Present the topic to be researched in the form of a short statement/question/hypothesis with clear
focus.
Overpopulation or Overconsumption. To what extent are they to blame for environmental
deterioration?
my initial resources will be
My initial resources of information will be party from online articles about scientists,
environmentalists or charity’s views on overpopulation and overconsumption respectively but also
what correspondence they have to one another. These views I wish to gather from various article
outlets so that I am able to have many references but also, I can incorporate various opinion
ensuring I deliver on my aims. For instance, an online article by George Monbiot on the Guardian
website wrote about the unjust use of blaming overpopulation on the poor taking away blame from
the rich. Moreover, I will endeavour to find as many books as I can that are available to me in
determining the problems evoked by overpopulation or overconsumption on the environment
(whether these are eBooks or physical books). In addition, I will use podcasts, interviews on
radios, YouTube, talk shows or forums to understand the solutions that scientists have about the
deterioration of our world and how the benefits compare from one solution to another. An
example, is the YouTube interview conducted by Greg Mofit interviewing Dave Gardner about his
upcoming film Growthbusters: Hooked on Growth. They talked about the concept of exponential
growth and the amount of our consumerism being determined by higher powers above.
the courses of study or area(s) of personal interest to which the topic relates
The area of personal interest this relates to is my strong urge to understand how much simply
humans being on the planet and the actions we take effect the planet. Whether this be the
resources used, the catastrophic effects of wildlife or climate change; learning about our impacts
is something I believe is fundamental in living a sustainable life. The idea of sustainability is
something that speaks volumes to me and an idea I feel we all need to educate ourselves on, if
we are going to continue to grow any further on this planet. Following on, I am very interested in
the power dynamics of overpopulation and overconsumption which has become apparent to me
through the preliminary research I undertook. The differences between the developed and
developing world is something I want to learn more about and understand. The environment has
always been something I hold close to my heart and to be able to delve deeper into the constructs
of it, away from my studies is something that deeply excites me. I would have like to have taken
geography as an A level in some ways and I feel like through my EPQ I am fulfilling that interest
into what I would particularly want to study.
my intended product
My intended product is a five-thousand-word essay that will explore the way overpopulation and
overconsumption have affected our environment and the repercussion that lie ahead for the future
generations. Throughout my essay, I hope to bring to light the disparity between scientists and
famed figures but also the ways in which their views are similar.
AIM- to find whether overpopulation or overconsumption has a greater effect on the environment,
to pinpoint the principles in our lives we need to change.
AIM- what solution are there to conquer the idea of exponential growth
AIM- to explore the views of various scientists, political leaders, environmentalist, economists or
journalists.
OBJECTIVES- To explore the effect of overpopulation on the environment
- Highlight what are the causes of overpopulation and overconsumption
-Gather people’s views/ predictions on overpopulation both past and present
E.g., historical geographers/ scientists/ economists on the population in the future- whether they
saw it as a problem enhancing the deterioration of the environment or something else entirely
