, Question 1
Refer to Unit 3 of your Tut Letter 501 and Chapter 12 of your prescribed text How to
Analyse Texts. Examine the spelling and pronunciation of the following words. Using
these words as examples, explain the discrepancy between spelling and pronunciation
in the English Language. In your explanation make clear reference to the manner of
articulation and the place of articulation.
a) Nation and fashion
b) counting and country
a) The words "nation" and "fashion" both have a discrepancy between spelling and
pronunciation in the English language. The letter combination "tion" is pronounced
differently in each word, even though it is spelled the same way.

In "nation," the "ti" is pronounced as "sh" because it is an affricate sound, which is
produced by a combination of a stop and a fricative. The "t" is a stop consonant, where
the airflow is stopped briefly in the mouth before being released, and the "sh" is a
fricative consonant, where the airflow is restricted through a narrow channel in the
mouth, creating a hissing or buzzing sound. The place of articulation for "ti" is the
alveolar ridge, where the tongue makes contact with the ridge behind the upper teeth.

In "fashion," the "ti" is pronounced as "sh" as well, but the sound is produced differently.
Instead of being an affricate sound like in "nation," it is simply a fricative sound. The
place of articulation for "ti" in "fashion" is also the alveolar ridge, but the manner of
articulation is different from that in "nation." The sound is produced by restricting the
airflow through a narrow channel in the mouth, just like in "nation," but there is no brief
stoppage of airflow like there is in the "ti" sound in "nation."

b) The words "counting" and "country" also have a discrepancy between spelling and
pronunciation in the English language. The letter combination "ou" is pronounced
differently in each word, even though it is spelled the same way.

In "counting," the "ou" is pronounced as "ow" because it is a diphthong, which is a
combination of two vowel sounds. The sound begins with an "o" sound, which is
produced by rounding the lips and raising the back of the tongue towards the soft
palate. The sound then transitions into a "w" sound, which is produced by rounding the
lips further and bringing them together in a tight circle. The place of articulation for both
sounds is the lips.

In "country," the "ou" is pronounced as "uh" because it is a monophthong, which is a
single vowel sound. The sound is produced by raising the back of the tongue towards
the soft palate, but the lips remain neutral. The sound is similar to the "uh" sound in
"butter" or "mother." The place of articulation for the sound is the back of the tongue and
the soft palate.
